YouTube Shorts Retention: Build Your Own Benchmarks
Build a retention baseline from your own comparable videos. There is no verified percentage in this guide that makes a Short viral. A short demonstration and a longer narrated story can have different viewing patterns.
Find the part that needs editing
- Compare the opening with the title's promise.
- Inspect a sharp drop for a confusing sentence, silence or scene mismatch.
- Inspect a repeated section to see whether it is useful or difficult to understand.
- Check whether the ending delivers the promised answer.
- Record length and observation period beside each result.
For an illustrative calculation, an average 18 seconds watched on a 30-second video corresponds to 60% of its length. That arithmetic does not establish a target or explain why a viewer left.
Use the retention chart to form a hypothesis, then test a clearer version of the relevant section in a later video. Keep the topic and format comparable where possible. Report the actual result with its sample rather than relabeling a generic percentage as an audited benchmark.
Put the script into production
Use the Shorts word counter as an estimate, then time your actual narration. Forgen is a Windows product in testing: provide your complete story and review the narration, scenes and editable CapCut draft. Connected providers may require internet access and usage credits. Join the waiting list if that workflow fits your needs.
